Lodging & Learning (MU CAFNR)

IT’S 7:00 A.M. AND BREAKFAST IS UNDER
WAY. NAPKINS ARE FOLDED…
AND THE TABLE IS SET BY UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI STUDENTS.
GUESTS AT THE GATHERING PLACE ARE SURPRISED TO DISCOVER MU STUDENTS
HELP RUN THIS UNIQUE BED AND BREAKFAST. “If this was in the UK it would now be
branded absolutely as a boutique hotel.” THE GATHERING PLACE, LOCATED JUST
ACROSS THE STREET FROM CAMPUS, IS ONE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI’S BEST
KEPT SECRETS. MU HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT STUDENTS
GET HANDS ON EXPERIENCE RUNNING THE BED AND BREAKFAST.
((NATS)) INNKEEPER DEBBIE STRID SUPERVISES THE
STUDENTS. “With a hotel they get maybe put in one
position and that’s the only position they might see
during an internship. Here they get more of a well
rounded experience.” THE HOUSE, BUILT IN 1905, IS MORE HIGH
TECH THAN YOU MIGHT REALIZE. MU STUDENTS USE INNOVATIVE
TECHNOLOGIES TO EASILY PROGRAM GUEST ROOM LIGHTING AND TEMPERATURE.
EVEN BREAKFAST ORDERS ARE STORED IN THE COMPUTER SO RETURNING GUESTS CAN HAVE THEIR EGGS CONSISTENTLY
PREPARED THE WAY THEY LIKE THEM. RESEARCH GATHERED FROM THE BED AND
BREAKFAST ALSO HELPS STUDENTS IN THEIR FIELD.
“It’s a great networking place, and I just get
to meet a lot of new people and learn a lot of
different stories and I think it just gives a lot of us
students a great experience for the real world.” THIS EXPERIENCE COULD HELP STUDENTS
LAND A BETTER JOB AFTER GRADUATION. “I like being around the people I work with
and serving people is something I always liked to
do, and making other people happy, so I think its
rewarding and fun at the same time.” IN COLUMBIA, KENT FADDIS REPORTING..
